The best first aid kit is the one you can find in the dark, with everything in it that a child actually needs.
Store-bought kits are a fine starting point, but they're built for adults. A family kit needs a few different things — and honestly, it needs a cartoon bandage or two.
The basics
Adhesive bandages in several sizes, sterile gauze pads, a roll of medical tape, an elastic wrap, non-latex gloves, blunt-tip scissors, tweezers, antiseptic wipes, antibiotic ointment and a digital thermometer.
The kid-specific additions
Children's pain and fever medication with a proper dosing syringe, an oral rehydration solution for stomach bugs, an instant cold pack, hydrocortisone cream for bites and rashes, saline for rinsing eyes, and a small tube of aloe.
Add any prescription your child depends on — an inhaler, an epinephrine auto-injector — and check the dates often.
The part parents forget
Write the dosing chart down. When you're groggy at midnight with a feverish child, you do not want to be doing math. Tape a card inside the lid with each child's current weight, the correct dose, your pediatrician's number, Poison Control (1-800-222-1222) and your insurance information.
Make it a little friendly
Colorful character bandages genuinely help. So does a small comfort item — a sticker sheet, a tiny flashlight the child can hold, a note in your handwriting. When a child feels involved instead of handled, they calm down faster.
Where to keep it
One kit at home somewhere every adult and older child can reach, but out of the reach of toddlers. A smaller one in the car. A travel pouch for the diaper bag, backpack or sports bag. Label them clearly.
Check it twice a year
Tie it to the same weekend you change your smoke alarm batteries. Toss expired medications, restock what you used, and update each child's weight on that dosing card.
A first aid kit is a small thing. But at the moment you need it, it's the difference between scrambling and simply reaching for the box.
